Eating, decisions, and science projects
Smorgasbord.
James
has been pretty good at feeding himself for some time. The problem isn't his
technique so much as it is just getting him
started.

It's
just after midnight on Wednesday night, Thursday morning. Tuesday evening,
Hsuan and I decided we'd be sending William to our (remaining) first choice
school. I signed the papers, cringing at the thought of paying 50% more per
year in tuition than at the second choice school, but knowing I'd regret lost
opportunities if we went with that second choice school. I comforted myself
with the thought that the school that sent the rejection letter was still more
expensive than the school we
chose.
Hsuan dropped our acceptance
form and registration fees off at the school Wednesday afternoon, where the head
of school personally met her and another mother, leaving us all with the good
feeling of having made the right
choice.

I
visited the high school on Wednesday afternoon, where I spoke with the science
department chairman and to a few of his students. Unfortunately, some of his
kids broke their Geiger counter earlier in the day, so I couldn't help with
that. I ended up spending a long time talking to a Korean or Korean-American
junior about her project to sample the Los Angeles River chemistry at various
points along the river. Unfortunately, we had no idea where the public could
access the actual water of the river, despite searching via Google (and Google
Maps).
Afterward, the chairman took me
out to Glendale, where he treated me to dinner at a Mediterranean
restaurant.
A wonderful experience all
around.

The
food poisoning from earlier in the week turns out not to have been from the sake
but rather from the cheese that Hsuan put on the steaks. I've got some serious
doubts about her ability to detect spoiled dairy products. It might be related
to her upbringing with Chinese food -- ever see cheese on a Chinese restaurant
menu?
The diarrhea is gone, but I've
been gassy for the past two days. Hard to suppress farts while riding in the
science department chairman's minivan. Luckily, he smokes cigars like crazy
(though not while I've been around), so I doubt he could smell
anything.
