Here's a week old photo

Birthday parties, PowerPoint, arthritis...

Here's a photo I took last weekend of Bessie and William in my office. I forgot the occasion. Bessie doesn't like flash photography, so she left the room as soon as I took the picture.

For the past couple of weeks, Bessie's front left paw has been bothering her, sometimes causing her to yelp or whimper in pain. She's been limping, but it comes and goes. When she's particularly unhappy, I try to get her to lie down so I can check out her paw, but it takes some work to soothe her enough that she doesn't reflexively bite or nip at my hand as I try to probe her foot. I think I end up soothing the pain away, because I've never been able to find a sore spot, and she ends up acting as if the pain is reduced.

Hsuan brought her to the vet, who thinks Bessie is getting early onset arthritis. I went to Walmart to get her some glucosamine/chondroitin/etc. arthritis supplements (bottled for humans), and I don't know if it's working or not. She seems better, though.

Work has been hit or miss this week. I implemented some code to do cuts to my LET data, but it introduced some bugginess that took a while to track down. Dick, Alan, and Ed have been out of town for most of the week, and when Dick came back on Friday and after I spent a solo lunch at my favorite sushi restaurant, I ended up spending the whole afternoon putting together LET matrix plots for a PowerPoint presentation. I had to tweak all sorts of settings to make things look good.

I'm tired of doing those plots, but I must admit that the versions I made for the PowerPoint file look very pretty onscreen.

We went to a birthday party for one of William's friends, A., today, and we have another party for his friend J. tomorrow. William was in the normally uncomfortable situation of being the only boy from their class at the party, though P., another friend and one of the other boys in the class, eventually showed up.

William and C.'s closeness has gotten more and more noticeable, particularly at today's party. C. was the girl whom William defended from F.'s aggressive play. We hear that it's making C's father a bit uncomfortable, though it doesn't seem to bother her mother or Hsuan and me. To tell the truth, I'm not sure William notices it, or if he does, he doesn't make a big deal of it.
