Washington

and the Air and Space Museum.

I spent the week in Washington, DC on (confidential) business. I flew out on Monday from Ontario through Dallas into Reagan National, which made travel to my hotel trivial. My work was done a few hours earlier than expected on Thursday, and since earlier return flights were entirely sold out, I checked into my return flight early, checking my luggage, and then I returned to the city to visit the Air and Space Museum. The place was packed with school children on field trips. The vast majority of them appeared not much interested in the place and more interested in babbling with their friends, or looking cool to their friends, or whatever. Teenagers. What more can one expect? On the other hand, there were small groupings of kids who appeared actively interested in the exhibits, and they were entirely composed of the stereotypes of those who would be interested -- nerdy, geeky-looking boys, or rather, young men, in small, protective groups. It's like the saying goes: One day, either you'll be a geek, or you'll work for one. Choose wisely.

I wasn't expecting to be a tourist on this trip, so my only camera was in my cell phone. Here's Space Ship One, or at least a model of it. I saw a movie in the Planetarium, and I saw Magnificent Desolation in the IMAX theater. I bought the boys a few t-shirts from the museum store.

I got back home late Thursday night. Unfortunately, both on the outgoing trip and on the return trip, half of my flights had me in the center seat. I've grown noticeably broader than airline seats since going to college, a very long time ago, so I much prefer an aisle seat where my shoulders can at least spill out into the aisle. Combine these cross-country flights with days sitting in meetings, and I returned home with a serious backache. Plus, I think I may have had a small kidney stone since flying out to Washington -- in the hotel, I woke up each night drenched in sweat. It wasn't until early Friday that I remembered that lower back pain and nighttime sweats were symptoms I had while having kidney stones in the past.
