W’s 2nd Degree Black Belt Test
This Saturday, W took his 2nd degree Black Belt test along with fellow 1st degree Black Belt, Zacharie. W has been a black belt for over two and a half years, Zacharie for about the same time, and both were well prepared.
The test was a marathon of well over two hours, and even then, they skipped free sparring. It began with almost over an hour of forms, with Master P. heatedly berating W and Zacharie individually for their hideous deficiencies, though as the test progressed he morphed more toward an instructive tone. The other judges even looked slightly taken aback, at first, at how angry he sounded, but they seemed to absorb his points pretty quickly. To their credit, both Zacharie and W took Master P.’s corrections in stride.
Interestingly, Master P. and all the judges stressed for both of them that their basic forms were almost perfect while their recent forms were weakest, simply because they’ve done the basic forms hundreds of times over the years.
After forms, one-step and a series of difficult multi-step sparring techniques were tested, followed by multiple breaking techniques. W is deemed still too young to attempt breaking bricks. At his own initiativel, Zacharie attempted to break four bricks at once, though everyone doubted it was possible. No bricks were broken, and fortunately, no bones were apparently broken, either. Credit was given for the attempt.
Afterward, Master P. brought them both into his office for a breakdown of their performance. At this level, a simple pass-fail isn’t given. Instead, a list of areas for improvement was assigned, and certificates will be given if they successfully satisfy the criteria Master P. set out for them in the next couple of weeks. They have to work together, though.
Las Vegas International Youth Chess Tournament
J and W competed in the Las Vegas International Youth Chess Championship this weekend. J competed in the 9 and under reserve section, and W competed in the 14 and under reserve section. Both played 5 games, and despite each losing one game during the tournament, winning 4 games was enough (after ratings tie-breaks) to allow each of them to bring home the 8th place trophies in each of their sections.
We spent the weekend with friends of both W and J. J’s friend, I., played as well as J (also winning 4 games), but he got a higher trophy (4th) because of the tie-breaks. Plus, he was an insufferably immodest jerk about it. His parents need to teach him about sportsmanship and modesty.

Old pages...
I discovered by accident of some idle web surfing that some of my old iWeb Photoblog pages have started showing up blank. Ugh. I don’t know if it’s the old iWeb software not playing nicely with Mavericks, or if the problem was just with iWeb alone. Just to be safe, I booted into an old Snow Leopard partition and attempted to reupload the blank pages that I found after initial attempts from the Mavericks partition failed. I think I got the blank pages — that I noticed — properly reuploaded.
Unfortunately, I did only the 2013 pages, and my pre-2012 pages may very well be subject to this problem. That’s a lot of pages for me to search through, so I may not get to it any time soon.
J's SP Red Belt
After a successful test on Saturday, today J received his SP Red Belt (red belt with black stripe down the middle; equivalent to a provisional black belt, I think, from the old days) and certificate.
Also this evening, I attended a Boy Scout Board of Review and tested L., one of W’s patrol-mates, for his second class rank advancement. My co-reviewer was a new dad in our patrol.
On the work front, I completed doing some housekeeping displays for our instrument monitoring software and asked for feedback, plus the database that I’ve been working on, with the developer, has had some features added.
Another piano recital
Since J missed doing the studio recital with his teacher, he performed in recital at the conservatory’s last recital of the academic year. I put up video. He played a piece by Khachaturian and two minuets by Bach. He had a little hiccup in the middle of the g-minor Bach minuet, but he backed up a little and the continued, so that was okay. Otherwise, his play was assured and almost flawless.
